Maximizing Sales at Your Etsy Storefront
By Ira Mency
Here are some tips to maximize your storefront sales if you are a seller on Etsy. This takes work on and outside of Etsy, so be prepared to spend some time “marketing” yourself.
Titles: Make sure your item title is specific yet catchy. Avoid long titles, abbreviations, and words not necessary.
Descriptions: Good descriptions are key including color, materials, size and condition, and should be written in a way that makes your shop sound friendly and inviting.
Materials tags: Many people overlook this but it is also a search-able field.
Tags/Keywords: Optimize keywords to include top category, color, materials, and words that are often used to describe the same item. For instance, you call it a crocheted blanket, but would others call it a bedspread, afghan, or throw? If you are part of an Etsy team, your team tags allow you to stand out in team treasuries, articles on the team, or team searches.
The Buddy System: Find a store with good sales that does not sell the same products as you. Ask if they would be willing to do the buddy system with you, by listing your store as one of their favorites in their shop announcement, and sweeten the deal with a free item from your shop. In turn, list theirs and return the favor.
Showcase: Etsy has different additional paid options available to help you maximum store exposure by “showcasing” your item in category-specific or main showcases. Find these items under your Etsy console.
Teams: Join a team on Etsy. There are options to join local teams, or global teams, read all the options and go through the application process for the teams you are interested in. Each team has it’s own guidelines and membership responsibilities so you should find out which is the best match for you.
Social Networking Outside of Etsy: Etsy gives you the platform to have an easy-to-run low-cost store, but the rest is up to you. To guarantee sales you must treat it like a business, offering a must-have item with great customer service, and advertise! Many free tools on the web are available for you to network your store such as blogging, tweeting via Twitter, using a Facebook page for your shop, or joining an online community.
It takes a lot of hard work but in the end the benefits will outweigh the results. Time, focus, and persistence pays off. Etsy’s selling guides and “Storque” articles have a plethora or resources available to sellers, which if you take the time to read, will be worth their weight in gold.
